In Which I Admit Wrongdoing
Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at 8:40PM Remember this post?
Well, I officially eat my words, because I bought the Kindle 3, it arrived last week, and I freakin' love it!
Before, I had been gallivanting with the Kindle 1, a relationship fraught with unmet expectations and moments of violence. (Kindle 1, I apologize for the time I threw you over the cofee table.) All along, his younger brother was the right match for me.
The Kindle 3 is so small I can carry it in my purse 24/7. I read on the train, the bus, waiting in the car, at Starbucks... even at restaurants while Bossyboots is in the restroom (shhh don't tell). I thought I was a power reader before - clearly there were new levels of book addiction I could rise to. Game. Set. Match. I love it.
Unlike the original, the Kindle 3 does NOT come with a case, so I also snagged one of these bad boys:

I lucked out with my choice of Kindle-protector, too. The sleeve is slim, so my Kindle is both protected and still space-efficient.
E-readers have become more and more commonplace. I think at least half (if not more) of my friends own one. For me, besides the affordably priced digital books, I love not having five bookshelves anymore. I only have my most prized books in hard copy. What about you? Are you an e-reader? If not, what's keeping you from making the jump?

I don't have one but I'm sure I would like having one! My MIL buys us lots of books for holidays so we're just kind of "used" to reading paper books (obviously) and I think she'd prefer to give us gifts that she can wrap rather than gift cards for E books. I guess that's probably one of the main reasons I don't have one! :) I'm sure it's just like having a smartphone...before I had one I thought they were a bit frivoulous, but now that I have one I feel like it's revolutionized my life and I can't go back to my "old ways".
I've been thinking about one but since I live in Europe, it's hard to get the books I want to read. I love the feeling of a book and I can highlight or write on it. I don't know if I can do the same with Kindle 3.
I love my kindle too! I thought that I would miss the tactile way of reading a book but, I quickly got used to it. I love to travel with it because I am an avid reader and would have 3-5 books a trip, that takes up a bit of space so having an e-read helps. I also love that I am not accumulating books all over the place.but, if I read a book that I love I do tend to buy it to add it to my library.
I also love the ability to change the font size. At night it is hard for me to read smapp fonts because my eyes ar tired but not with kindle.
So yea, I love that thing!
I'm intrigued by the portability and space saving capabilities of e-readers, but haven't purchased one, because I'm addicted to the library. My reading habits over the past year have consisted of visiting a book store, taking pics of interesting books with my phone, and then requesting them from the library. It's free, so it's hard to justify an e-reader purchase knowing that I'd have to spend $10/book. But, it sure would be nice to have books with me all the time, as opposed to needing a big tote bag!
YES! Love my Kindle! I would die without it. Dramatic? yes. True? YES! :)
I rarely ever read for pleasure, but I've been reading daily since I got my Kindle. I hope I can keep it up. I resisted for a long time but I LOVE this thing. I also love that I can get on the Internet with it, since I don't have a smart phone or data plan on my cell.
I ordered the Amazon leather case for my kindle 3 and it arrived yesterday. I don't know if I like it or not because it made my kindle 3x as thick, and it seems like it's 3x as heavy too. I also pre-ordered another case though, so I am hoping that one will be lighter when it comes. The second case is... ahem... girly... so Mr. N thinks he'll use the leather one (which is brown) if he gets a kindle (or 'snags' mine).
I have the Kindle 2 - which I ordered, like, way too close to when the 3 came out (dumb, dumb, dumb). But I love it. I still go to the library because I don't have the cash to spend on buying every book I read, even at the delightfully low digital prices. I can't wait to travel with it though. I know it'll make it all worthwhile.
I haven't crossed over yet. I have the same resistance as most people-the smell and charm of a book in your hands is so lovely. BUT, I am continuously forcing myself to move forward with technology as not become an "old fuddy duddy." Yep, I'm bringing back the phrase "old fuddy duddy."
More importantly: WHAT are you reading that is so dang riveting? I can't find a good book to save my soul.
Ooo I'm glad you like the 3! I don't read enough to warrant one but I would want to get one if I moved to a city where I used public transport.
I actually did my senior project in college about these little contraptions and what a shame it is that they will ruin the printing industry (I majored in print communication), I have been against them since the get go, but darn it, I think I'm going to have to buy one for my honeymoon next July.... they just seem so handy!
Your post inspired me to get a kindle too! Like you i LOVE books and was anti-kindle for a long time.... but i went ahead and bought one and i am totally in love! Just finished my first book on it and i love that it sycs with my iphone- soooo convenient! i think it was the part where you said you drop it in your purse and read whenever you are waiting that made me realize its potential. Anyways.... i don't think i have ever commented before but i love your blog! Thanks for sharing!
I don't have one even though I probably should. I don't buy very many books because I share with friends or get them from the library. I know if I got a Kindle, I'd buy books all the time and I'm not ready to spend $10 on a book I can't lend to whoever I want. If I moved abroad, I'd get one in a heartbeat though.
I have not made the switch, not sure if I will....there's just something so peaceful about going into a book store, pulling a book off the shelf, cracking open the fresh cover without breaking the binding, and getting a few paragraphs in then deciding that yes, I can see myself getting lost in this one, or nope, didn't catch my attention, on to the next pretty cover.Don't know if I could give that up for a Kindle.
