The Friends You Make
Friday, July 9, 2010 at 7:00AM As you probably know, unless you're a new reader (hi!), I'm from Texas. I spent the first six months of my life in Tiny Town #1, New Mexico, and then spent the next 17.5 years of my life in Tiny Town #2 and Tiny Town #3, in Texas. About twice a year, I visit TX to catch up with old friends and my family. I do not call it a vacation because I generally have about a week to visit with 8,000 siblings and my TX friends.
This is never enough time. HOWEVER, this visit, the Schedule Gods smiled on me and I was able to have dinner with my TX girlfriends.
I have a group of girlfriends that I met in high school, roundabout when we were 14. We were friendlytown in high school, but we actually became REAL friends after high school. I don't really know how that happened! Usually, after high school, you grow apart from your schoolage buds, but that's not really how it worked for us. I'd actually say we've gotten closer.
To give you some perspective... a trip down High School Horror Lane:
*I whited out everyone's faces because... I don't think I'd appreciate it if someone posted my picture on the internet willy nilly! They are perfectly beautiful people underneath those white spots.
Our formal Junior Banquet (our dresses weren't TOO bad!)

We are dressed funnily because we were working on a play!
I think, when you're a teenager, you choose your friends based on how cool they are, how fun they are to hang out with, etc etc. Of course those things come into play when you're a grown-up, too, but... I think your standards grow more thoughtful. Since we've grown up, we've all individually experienced super highs and heart-crushing lows, and for me, seeing how they've dealt with it all has only deepened my love and respect for them. We've known each other for roughly 18 years now (oh god, I'm old) and we now have the longview on the choices we made as teens and where life took us along the way - it's kind of neat, I think!
This is what we all look like now(!): Can you figure out who's who?

This is Amber's new son - He is very dangerous because this flirty boy spreads baby fever wherever he goes! He has very smoochable cheeks, especially.

What about you? Do you have friends that you grew up with? How is your relationship with them different now, rather than when you were kids?

I have lost touch with most of my friends from high school. I tried to keep in touch in college but thing just went in different directions.
My college friends are the closest ones that i have and i am so grateful for them.
Wow, you look the same as you did in high school (gorgeous, that is) :). I also had people I was "friendly" with in high school then became friends with post-graduation :)
