Love in The Windy City: A Midwestern Map
Monday, June 7, 2010 at 7:01AM Many moons ago, Julie wrote to book me for her 2010 wedding. I was so excited because... I happen to live in the focus of her map:
She and her fiance Neil live here in The Chi, but they often make weekend road trips to visit Neil's family here:
This was a great opportunity to meld the energy and metal of Chicago, with the natural beauty and peacefulness of Iowa. We had a great time brainstorming Julie and Neil's favorite places!
Julie's family are A1 White Sox fans, so of course I had to draw that in! I love the fireworks...
Perhaps my favorite part of the map is Sears Tower (I can't bring myself to call it by its new name, Willis Tower - can't do it!) I love drawing in perspective, especially when presented with one of the tallest buildings in the world. Holy Name Cathedral is one of the most beautiful churches in Chicago, as you can see - and how fun are the kayaks!?

I just started reading your blog and I am fascinated by your maps. I have been waiting to see one of Chicago Since I started reading (48 pages ago- Yup, I'm reading start to finish because I kind of fell in love (in a non creepy way)). I was stunned when I saw it. Not only is my name Julie, but my boyfriend of 3 years is from Iowa and my family (specifially dad and brother) are die hard Sox fans. It was weird how closly this resembled my life. And, I can promise when you start taking map requests again I will want a map very similiar to this with my own favorite Chicago (and Iowa) hot spots all over it. I absolutely love it, great job.
